You can leave a voice role play partway through and finish it later. Your conversation so far is saved, and you get one score when you finish. Your admin turns this on for each assignment or training plan section. ### Pause a role play and leave 1. During a voice role play, select **Pause & exit**. 2. The **Pause and come back later?** dialog opens. Select **Pause & exit** to leave, or **Keep practicing** to stay in the role play. 3. Brevity saves your role play. Keep the page open while you see **Saving your role play. Keep this page open.** 4. When the save finishes, you see **Role play paused. Resume it any time from this assignment.** Brevity saves the transcript, the feedback on each of your turns, the milestones you reached and the recording so far. The role play is not scored when you pause it.   If you see **Couldn't pause the role play. You can keep practicing or end it.**, the role play is still running. Keep going, or end it the normal way to get a score. **Pause & exit** is separate from the in-session pause. The in-session pause still works as before: up to 3 pauses of up to 5 minutes each, and the role play continues on the same screen. **Pause & exit** has no time limit and does not use up those pauses. ### Find your paused role play Open the assignment, or the training plan section, where you paused. A **Paused role play** card shows when you paused and how many exchanges you had, for example "2 hours ago · 6 exchanges". The card has **Resume** and **Discard**.   You can have one paused role play per assignment, or per training plan section. While one is paused, you can't start a new attempt on that assignment. Resume it or discard it first. A paused role play does not appear on your Home page or in My Assignments cards. Go to the assignment to find it. ### Resume a paused role play 1. Open the assignment and select **Resume** on the **Paused role play** card. 2. The role play opens with your earlier conversation on screen and the note **Picking up where you left off — speak when you're ready.** 3. Speak first. The persona does not greet you again. It remembers everything already said and continues from where you stopped. You can pause and resume the same role play more than once. When you end it, Brevity scores the whole conversation once. If **Resume** is not available, the card tells you why: - **Your recording is still saving. You can resume in a moment.** Wait a few seconds and try again. - **This role play can't be resumed with your organization's current voice settings. Discard it to start a new attempt.** Your organization changed its voice setup after you paused. ### Discard a paused role play 1. Select **Discard** on the **Paused role play** card. 2. In **Discard this paused role play?**, select **Discard**. The conversation is deleted and is not scored. You can then start a new attempt. If you discard one by mistake, contact Brevity Support. ### What happens to your score - A paused role play has no score until you finish it. - It does not count toward training plan progress or passing streaks, and it does not appear in Recent or in score reports until you finish it. - When you finish, you get one score for the whole conversation, across every part. - The role play's duration leaves out the time it was paused. - The recording parts are joined into one recording. Right after you finish, you may briefly see the recording as **Part 1**, **Part 2** and so on while Brevity joins them. ### For admins: turn on Pause & exit 1. Ask your Brevity CSM to turn on Pause & exit for your organization. 2. Turn on **Allow pause during recording** for each assignment or training plan section where learners can pause. **Allow pause during recording** is the same setting that controls the in-session pause, and it is off by default. When Pause & exit is on for your organization, the setting's help text includes "Learners can also choose Pause & exit to leave a role play and finish it later." To turn it on for an assignment, go to the **Final Details** step when you create or edit the assignment and check **Allow pause during recording**.   To turn it on for a training plan section, open the section's **Assignment Settings** and check **Allow pause during recording**.   To turn it on for every open assignment at once, go to your organization's role play defaults, find **Pause Recording** and select **Enable for All Open Assignments**. Confirm with **Yes, I'm sure**.   If your organization turns Pause & exit off later, learners can no longer pause new role plays. Role plays that are already paused can still be resumed or discarded. ### Limits - Pause & exit works with voice role plays on the Deepgram, OpenAI Realtime and LiveKit voice setups. It is not available on AssemblyAI. - It is hidden in multi-persona role plays. - One paused role play per assignment, or per training plan section. - Paused role plays don't expire. - Admins can't see a list of paused role plays. A paused role play shows in reports only after the learner finishes it. - Resuming the same role play in two browser tabs at once is not supported. - Pausing can take several seconds while Brevity saves the conversation. Keep the page open until you see the confirmation. ### Frequently asked questions **Does pausing hurt my score?** No. The role play is scored once, when you finish it, over the whole conversation. **Why don't I see Pause & exit?** Your organization hasn't turned it on, the assignment doesn't allow pausing, or the role play has more than one persona. Ask your admin. **Can I start over instead of resuming?** Yes. Select **Discard** on the paused role play, then start a new attempt. **Will my admin see the paused attempt in reports?** Not until you finish it.
