Device Settings
Along the bottom of the practice window, you can change your device settings for the role play conversation. This includes settings for your camera, microphone, and speaker devices.

Troubleshooting your device selection during role play:
- If the persona is speaking over you, check to ensure your microphone is selected correctly. Assess the transcript to verify your speech is being detected.
- If the persona starts to talk, then stops without your talking, you may have feedback from your external microphone. To diagnose, play back your last session to listen for an echo. If you hear an echo, you will need to use headphone or an internal microphone.
Selecting your Practice Mode
When enabled, hints and scripts can be displayed by clicking the blue button at the bottom edge of the practice window. Selecting Scripts will open the scripts panel on the right side. Selecting Hints will introduce hints beneath the milestones during role play.
Scripts mode configuration:
Note: If you wish to be able to mute the AI during a role play, you must select "No Help" as your support mode for that conversation.

Blur your Background
You can blur your background during a role play session, just like you would on a video call. This is a personal preference that persists across sessions — once you turn it on, it stays on until you turn it off.
To enable background blur, select the blur option in the camera controls before or during your session. The blur takes effect immediately on your camera preview.

Turning your Camera On/Off
You can turn your camera off before or during a role play session. When the camera is off, an avatar (or your initials on a colored background) replaces the camera feed.
Important: During an active recording, the camera toggle is one-way — once you turn the camera off, it cannot be turned back on until the session ends. This is to protect the integrity of the recording file.
To use camera off, toggle the camera control in the device settings area before starting your role play, or during the session.
Note: Camera On/Off must be enabled by your admin on the assignment. If you don't see a camera toggle, your assignment may not have this option enabled.

Pause and Resume
When enabled, you can pause your role play session mid-conversation — for example, if someone walks in or you need a moment to collect your thoughts. Pausing preserves the recording as a single continuous file.
When you click pause:
- A "Finishing up..." message appears while the AI completes its current response. Your speaker and microphone are muted automatically.
- Once the AI finishes, the overlay changes to "Paused." You can take as long as you need.
- Click Resume to continue. Your speaker and microphone return to their previous state, and the AI picks up where it left off.
Session limits:
- You can pause up to 3 times per session. After the third pause, the pause button is disabled.
- Each pause lasts up to 5 minutes for a total of 15 minutes of pause. If cumulative pause time is reached, the session automatically ends and your session is saved.
Note: Pause must be enabled by your admin on the assignment. If you don't see a pause button, your assignment may not have this option enabled. For more details, see [Pausing a Role Play Session].
Mute the AI
You can mute the AI persona's audio during a role play session. This is useful when you need to deliver a longer presentation and want the AI to defer its response until the end of your presentation.

When Mute the AI is enabled for an assignment, the user will see a mute icon in the middle of the AI's image upon hovering. Click the speaker icon to mute the AI audio. Click it again to unmute. The mute state is locked while the session is paused and restores to its previous state when you resume.
Note: Users must use the "unassisted" practice mode to be able to mute the AI during a role play.
Select the Role Play Language
When enabled, you can choose to complete the role play in any available language. To change the language, click the Languages drop-down in the top right corner and select your desired language:

Note: If you don't see a language dropdown, your assignment may have only one language is available for that Role Play. Update available languages for the assignment on the Assignments Tab or set your Org default languages in Org Settings.
