Known Issue: Role play practice may reopen previous session instead of starting a new one

Learners who start a new role play practice while their last recording is still processing may be taken back into the previous session with missing controls and a blocking dialog.

Summary

Some users may be returned to a previously recorded role play session (with missing controls and a blocking dialog) when they try to start a new practice immediately after ending a prior session.

Who Is Affected

  • Roles: Any learner using the Role Play module

  • Features:

    • Role Play practice sessions

    • “Start Practice” within a Role Play module

  • Scope:

    • Users who click Start Practice again while the prior session is still processing

What You Might Notice

  • After ending a role play and exiting the module, clicking Start Practice again:

    • Re-opens your previously recorded session instead of clearly starting a new one

    • Shows a dialog box that blocks part of the screen

    • Controls appear to be missing or unavailable for the new practice attempt

  • It may look like you’re “stuck” in the old recording even though you attempted to start a new practice.

Workaround

To avoid this behavior:

  1. Wait for the previous session to finish processing before starting another practice.

    • Give the system a short window to upload and process the last recording.

  2. After ending a role play:

    • Exit the module

    • Wait ~30–60 seconds (or until you’d reasonably expect processing to finish)

    • Then click Start Practice again

  3. If you see the blocking dialog and missing controls:

    • Exit the role play module

    • Reopen the module and then click Start Practice again after a brief wait

What not to do:

  • Avoid rapidly ending a session, exiting, and immediately clicking Start Practice again while the previous session is still clearly processing.

What’s Happening (High-Level)

When a new practice is started while the previous role play recording is still processing, the system can incorrectly reopen the prior session context. This results in the prior recording view being displayed with UI elements (controls) not correctly reloaded and a dialog box obscuring the experience, instead of cleanly initializing a fresh practice session.

Current Status

  • The issue has been identified and a fix is in progress.

  • This article will be updated once the fix is fully confirmed in production and the behavior is no longer reproducible.

When to Contact Support

Please contact Brevity Support if:

  • You continue to see this behavior after waiting for processing and restarting the module

  • The blocking dialog and missing controls persist across multiple attempts

Include in your message (if possible):

  • A brief description of what you were doing (e.g., “Ended a role play, exited the module, immediately clicked Start Practice”)

  • Browser and OS

  • Approximate time of the issue

  • A screenshot or short screen recording showing the missing controls / blocking dialog
